FISH BEYOND THE HORIZON

an experience to remember

The destination fly fishing selections we offer are a result of our own experiences. Not only have we been on these excursions, but we can also help guide you or your group travel as a ReelFly hosted adventure. For 2018/2019 we will be offering two destination trips. The first is a journey to Ascension Bay, Mexico. Guests will stay at the Grand Slam Lodge located just north of the little town of Punta Allen. Our second trip is one we have been professionally guiding since 2012 and is a rugged but very comfortable adventure down the Devils River north of Del Rio, Texas. We look forward to adding more travel options soon but want to make sure we have fully vetted them before we feel comfortable offering them to our clients.

description

For avid fly fishermen, it doesn’t get any better than the GrandSlam Fishing Lodge in Ascension Bay, Mexico. Just an hour’s drive south of Tulum, is a pristine fishery in the Sian Kaan Biosphere Reserve. It hosts some of the biggest permit in the world and enormous schools of bonefish. With tarpon and snook on hand, it’s one of the world’s best places to go for a Grand Slam or Super Slam. The lodge provides a private guide for each angler. Fly fisherman will find the expansive flats of Ascension Bay a thrill. You can try reef and offshore sports fishing too. Off the water, live the luxurious life in one of 12 beachfront villa rooms, complete with air conditioning, king-sized beds, satellite television, wrap-around deck and locking rod racks. After a day on the bay, cool off in the pool or have drinks delivered to you at your Bali beach bed. Dine on fresh-caught lobster and fish for dinner, then enjoy an aged rum and a Cuban cigar while swapping fishing stories. The accommodations are plush, the service is excellent, the food is spectacular, and the margaritas solve any problems you may think you have!

The fishing is done out of 23-ft. panga boats which are stable in the shallow flats, have a wide casting area on the flat bow, and a poling platform at the back for sighting fish. The permit in Ascension Bay are among the largest in the world ranging from 16lb to 30lb. The bonefish range from 2lb to 8lb which put up a tough fight, often changing speed and direction. Bonefish make up for their size with volume – the schools in this area are large, sometimes up to 100 fish. Additionally there are young tarpon in the bay year-round in the 5lb to 30lb range. You'll find schools of fish rolling in the cool holes of the lagoons and mangroves aggressively looking to eat. Large migratory tarpon up to 70lb or 80lbs are in the bay during the late spring and summer.

description

The Devils River is one of the most pristine waterways in Texas and considered a "bucket list" fly fishing trip for many. The short 94 mile river begins it's journey in Sutton County just Southwest of Sonora and empties into Lake Amistad. With difficult access as a result from being surrounded by private property, and a Texas Parks and Wildlife regulated permit system, the river has remained largely unspoiled. This is a truly unique adventure and is one that draws clients in from all over the country. The water is pristine and often described as "gin clear" which makes it reminiscent of fishing in a tropical location. Due to it's remoteness and quality habitat the river is a tremendous fishery and an epic location for any fly angler. The Smallmouth Bass population is a large draw but expect to have opportunities at aggressive Largemouth Bass as well as some willing and able bodied Carp. Not only is the fishing phenomenal but the nature is too. Many mornings and evenings have been spent watching Whitetail Deer, Auodad, Rio Grande Turkey, Feral Pigs, Fox, Rabbits, Bobcats, and more as well as a huge diversity in bird species.

Your trip begins with the first night at a very comfortable private cabin just minutes from the river. From there, the next two nights and two and a half days will be spent on the water. Though this is a rugged excursion we make sure to take care of our clients. The fishing is conducted out of 14' AIRE whitewater rafts where you will be paired off with a guide. Spend your day fishing while our guides row you down the river, position you for casting opportunities, and take pictures along the way. Don't worry about packing up in the morning or having to set up camp in the evenings as we will take care of all of that for you. At the end of both fishing days you'll arrive to an already set up camp with refreshments and an excellent dinnering being prepared. When we take out of the river we will have a shuttle arranged to pick us up and take us back to the cabin where your vehicles are located. We are very fortunate to have this river in close proximity to us in Texas and pleased to be able to share this experience with you.
